The opening day of the Premiership season should be one of optimism, hope and enthusiasm; a day when anything seems possible. For some fans, like those of Man City and Arsenal, winning the league title seems feasible. For others, challenging for a top 4 spot seems a realistic aim. For the newly promoted teams, simply surviving relegation is a huge challenge, but one their supporters believe is very possible. But, despite all this confidence, Blackpool smashed all expectations at the weekend, and produced a result that even the most optimistic of fans could not have predicted.

The World Cup is not even over yet and silly season has already begun in the papers. West Ham have been linked with Juan Roman Riquelme and the latest Brazilian wonderkid while Manchester City are reportedly interested in James Milner, Yaya Toure, Edin Dzeko, Pele and Jesus Christ (probably). The papers hurl a whirlwind of bollocks towards you at this time of year so let’s take a look at some of the done deals and more realistic gossip.

First of all, let’s take a look at the big signing of the summer. After months of no speculation, Colchester have finally landed Barrow midfielder Andrew Bond in a multi-pound deal. Some bloke called David Silva has joined Manchester City as well.

If Sepp Blatter has done one good thing in his time in charge then it has been to make football more of a world game and get the lesser names involved. One of his main ways of doing this has been to award a World Cup to Africa, giving the Bafana Bafana a chance to impress on the biggest stage of them all. So have they impressed?

Without being there it is hard to argue a compelling point either way but I have formed a opinion from TV and attendance figures. The World Cup means an awful lot to the people of South Africa but FIFA have not allowed them to fully appreciate the tournament. It appears that tickets prices are far too high for the average fan in South Africa, leaving swathes of empty seats in the group games and even some knockout matches; the South Korea v Uruguay game had 5,000 unsold tickets! The situation is reminiscent of the Cricket World Cup in the West Indies a few years back where games were not even watched by one man and his dog.

"Nice to see your home fans boo you. That's what loyal support is." The words of one Wayne Rooney after the one of the worst England displays in recent memory against Algeria. This has split opinion amongst England fans but I am firmly behind Wazza here; loyal fans do not boo.[/FONT]

To be loyal is to be steadfast in allegiance to one’s homeland and booing surely breaks this allegiance. I wouldn’t have a problem with people booing if they didn’t then claim to be ‘loyal’ or the ‘best fans in the world’. Truly great supporters don’t have opinions, they just support no matter how good or bad the team is. Some fans claim that booing is an honest opinion, that it may be, but how does it help in any way shape or form?
